Abstract This study aimed to propose developmental mechanisms that contribute to improving the social support programs provided to international students and to identify the challenges facing these programs. To achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive survey method was employed. The study sample consisted of (393) international students at the Islamic University of Madinah, to whom a questionnaire was administered. In addition, interviews were conducted with (10) international students from different disciplines, colleges, and nationalities to explore the challenges they encounter. The results of the study revealed that the mechanisms for developing social support programs were rated as “very high,” with an overall mean score of (4.20). The most prominent developmental mechanisms included enhancing cultural support and community integration, developing academic advising programs, establishing specialized psychological support centers, improving digital services, developing the residential environment, increasing the efficiency of financial support, and enhancing services and programs aimed at integrating students with disabilities into the university environment. The interview results also revealed several challenges faced by international students, including weak academic advising, difficulty understanding certain university systems and procedures, feelings of alienation and difficulty in psychological and social adjustment, as well as cultural and linguistic challenges. Additional challenges included limited financial support, housing and living-service problems, lack of clarity in some digital and administrative services, and challenges related to supporting students with disabilities, particularly concerning infrastructure, support services, and specialized academic and psychological assistance.
