Abstract This study aims to uncover the communicative function of utterances in Arabic narrative texts by analyzing their linguistic and semantic structures and linking them to the social and political contexts that produced them. The research demonstrates that utterances are not merely linguistic units but communicative tools carrying intertwined meanings, playing a crucial role in shaping narrative vision and highlighting the dialectic between self and other, reality and imagination. Through examples from Algerian and Arab novels, it becomes evident that utterances contribute to the formation of cultural awareness, reveal the impact of violence and domination, and expose dimensions of identity and belonging, while employing Sufi and historical symbols to re-question reality. The study concludes that the communicative function of utterances represents a central mechanism in narrative, enabling the novel to serve as a space of interaction between language, thought, and reality, and opening multiple interpretive possibilities for readers. This enhances the value of the novel as a literary and intellectual document that enriches critical studies.
