Abstract
Abstract
This study aims to examine the reception trajectories of Kaʿb ibn Zuhayr’s Bānat Suʿād and al-Būṣīrī’s Burda in the Arabic literary tradition and to explain how the two poems developed into enduring traditions through performance, poetic rewriting, geographical circulation, and shifts in the media of transmission. Its methodology combines a comparative historical approach to reception with textual analysis and a bibliographical survey of evidence concerning recitation, poetic imitation, takhmīs, other forms of poetic expansion, manuscripts, miscellanies, printed editions, and translations. The principal findings show that the two poems’ shared designation as Burda and their common praise of the Prophet did not produce identical reception histories. Bānat Suʿād remained more closely connected to the memory of Kaʿb’s conversion, the Prophet’s acceptance of the poem, and the authority of the Arabic poetic model and its imitations and takhmīs compositions. Al-Būṣīrī’s Burda, by contrast, acquired a broader devotional and performative presence in assemblies, processions, mawlid celebrations, and, in some settings, practices of blessing and healing. The findings also demonstrate that poetic rewriting preserved the authority of the original while creating new textual layers, and that manuscript culture, print, and translation reshaped the audiences and functions of both poems. The study concludes that the two Burdas generated interconnected but non-identical traditions: a Kaʿbian tradition more closely tied to prophetic biography and Arabic poetic authority, and a Būṣīrian tradition more extensively developed through devotional performance, poetic recomposition, and circulation across regions and languages.
