Abstract: This study aims to trace the manifestations of the heritage component in the analytical and applied critical works of the Egyptian critic Ahmed Darwish (1943–2026). It adopts a metacritical approach as its method of analysis. Given the diversity of the fields in which Darwish wrote, combining authorship and translation and bringing together the classical and the modern, the study is divided into four sections. The first is devoted to translation, the second to critical research, the third to examining the role of the heritage component as a gateway to reading the modern text, and the fourth to exploring the resonance of this heritage component in questions of identity. The study has reached several conclusions, the most significant of which is that Darwish’s authentic grounding in the Arab heritage and his extensive and solid Arab cultural background shielded him from the allure of Western critical approaches, whose principles he thoroughly explored and whose depths he deeply probed. This grounding also made heritage a constant point of reference throughout his critical works, both theoretically and practically, and in both his original writings and translations.
