This study aims to examine agriculture and food-provisioning crafts in Yemen from the third to the mid-fifth century AH, and to clarify the role of cultivators, farmers, and craftsmen in provisioning society and linking agricultural production to market needs and daily life. The study adopts a socio-historical approach based on collecting scattered references from geographical, topographical, and historical sources and analyzing them within their temporal and social contexts. It concludes that agriculture formed an important basis of livelihood in Yemeni society, and that food-provisioning crafts contributed to transforming raw materials, preparing food, preserving it, transporting it, and selling it. The findings also show that these crafts linked the countryside, the sea, and the desert hinterland with the city and the market, and reveal the practical role of the common social groups in maintaining social and economic life.
