Abstract
Abstract
This study examines the landmarks of al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah for which specific virtues have been reported without being established by sound evidence. It traces and authenticates (takhrīj) the relevant ḥadīths and āthār (reports from the Companions and Successors), determines their grades, and discusses them in light of the views of hadith scholars and critics. The study aims to distinguish between established and unestablished virtues, to correct misconceptions about certain sites in Madinah, and to caution against beliefs and devotional practices that may be associated with them without resting on sound evidence.
The study follows the hadith-critical method in tracing the narrations and examining their chains of transmission (isnād) and texts (matn), drawing on the relevant hadith and historical sources. It is organized into three chapters, dealing respectively with the specific virtues reported for the mountains, wells, and cemeteries of Madinah.
The study concludes that narrations on the virtues of places must be subjected to rigorous scholarly verification, and that no legal (sharʿī) virtue should be ascribed to a particular site except on the basis of sound evidence. This contributes to serving the Prophetic Sunnah and to correcting the narrations related to Madinah.
Keywords: Madinah; landmarks; virtues of places; unauthenticated hadiths; hadith authentication (takhrīj); critique of narrations.
