Abstract

The present study aimed to search the predictive ability of cognitive flexibility in self-regulated learning and to determine the level of each of them among students of Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman. It also uncovers the difference between them, which might be caused by the following variables of student gender (male/ female), and type of college (science/ humanities). It also aimed to possibly predict self- regulated learning strategies through cognitive flexibility. The study sample consisted of (426) male and female students from Sultan Qaboos University who were chosen by convenient sample during the spring semester of the academic year 2020/ 2021. It also applied the cognitive flexibility scale and self- regulated learning strategies scale after they were adapted to the Omani environment. The result showed that 210 students have above average of cognitive flexibility and 270 students have average self-regulated learning strategies. Results also proved that variables of gender made no difference and that students of humanities colleges have higher adaptive flexibility than science college students. The study was able to predict the total mark of self-regulated learning strategies through cognitive flexibility, which contributes to 35.4% of the variance in the level of the dependent variable (self-regulated strategies learning).
