Abstract
This study examines the applied principles related to objections raised against reasoning with evidence from the Qur’an in the book Al-Mumahhad by Judge ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Mālikī (d. 422 AH). This book is a commentary on the Mukhtaṣar al-Mudawwanah by Ibn Abī Zayd al-Qayrawānī (d. 386 AH). At the outset, I discuss the nature of objections to reasoning with the Qur’anic text, along with related terminologies used by dialecticians and jurists. I also provide an introduction to Imam Ibn Abī Zayd al-Qayrawānī and his Mukhtaṣar al-Mudawwanah, as well as to Judge ʿAbd al-Wahhāb and his book Al-Mumahhad. Regarding the objections themselves, the study addresses those raised against Qur’anic reasoning on the grounds of shared evidence (musāharah bi al-dalīl), generality (ijmāl), and contradiction (muʿāraḍah), along with practical examples for each objection.
