Abstract

This research aims to establish the issue of imposing unbearable obligations in light of the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah by presenting the statements of theologians along with their evidence, engaging in a scholarly discussion of these statements, and evaluating them against the evidence of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah. It seeks to clarify the various opinions on the matter and determine the correct stance in accordance with the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology, collecting the various opinions on the issue with proper attribution whenever possible, providing commentary based on the insights derived from religious texts, and incorporating the statements of scholars. A comparison of these opinions was conducted, and conclusions were drawn therefrom. Key Findings: 1. There is no objection to referring to Islamic legal rulings as "takālīf" (obligations) when the term denotes commands and prohibitions, as this usage is found in the statements of some early scholars. 2. All Islamic legal obligations are within the capacity of the accountable individual, as Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, and obligations that exceed one’s ability are lifted. 3. The disagreement regarding the imposition of unbearable obligations stems from the dispute over the concept of capacity (istita‘ah), which underlies the differing opinions of opposing groups. 4. The texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah indicate that imposing unbearable obligations is not applicable in Islamic law, whether concerning what is intrinsically impossible, impossible due to external factors, or what Allah knows will not occur or has declared as such. None of these constitute an imposition of unbearable obligations, and this understanding aligns with the principles of Islamic law.
