Abstract
The study examines Waki‘’s statements on al-Jarh wa al-Ta‘dil (narrator criticism and appraisal) as found in his book Akhbar al-Qudat. It is divided into an introduction and two sections. The introduction presents a definition of al-Jarh wa al-Ta‘dil and a brief biography of Waki‘. The first section discusses the narrators whom Waki‘ himself criticized or praised, and their number reached 41 narrators. The second section deals with the narrators regarding whom Waki‘ transmitted criticism and appraisal from others, numbering 8 narrators. Research Methodology: The methodology followed in this research is the inductive analytical method. Among the most important findings: 1.Waki‘ was a memorizer and critic with deep knowledge of narrators and their reports, and he was from Ahl al-Sunnah. 2. It became clear that he was moderate in al-Jarh wa al-Ta‘dil, leaning toward leniency in very few cases. These are the statistics of the research: •He agreed with the critics and the strongest opinion in 35 cases. •He was lenient in 6 cases.
