Abstract
Abstract: This research consists of an introduction, three sections, a conclusion, and technical indexes. In the introduction, I addressed the significance of the topic, search problem, the reasons for choosing it, previous studies, and the methodology adopted in the research. The preface discusses that the particle “wāw” in Arabic is one of the particles of meaning, and that it has numerous categories and functions in the language. It represents an important linguistic aspect associated with many grammatical and semantic rulings, carrying various nuances, meanings, and usages. The study adopts the descriptive-analytical method, with clarification and detailed examination of the particle wāw in Arabic, and of what has been transmitted from Imām al-Shāfiʿī—may Allah be pleased with him—regarding whether it conveys sequence or simple conjunction. The first section examines the statements transmitted from uṣūl scholars in the Shāfiʿī school regarding the functions of wāw. The second section presents what has been reported from several grammarians concerning the position of Imām al-Shāfiʿī on the particle wāw. The third section discusses the preponderant opinion in the issue according to the researcher, followed by the conclusion. Keywords: Wāw; al-Shāfiʿī; Uṣūl Scholars; Grammarians.
