Abstract

Abstract
This study presents a critical edition of the Tafsir of Surah Ha Mim al-Sajdah from Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Azim, attributed to ‘Abd al-Karim ibn ‘Ali al-Ansari, known as ‘Alam al-Din Ibn Bint al-‘Iraqi (d. 704 AH), accompanied by an analytical examination of his exegetical methodology. The research addresses the issue of disputed attribution found in some modern editions and reassesses the work within its proper historical and intellectual context in the seventh century AH. The study adopts a critical editorial methodology based on the collation of multiple manuscript copies, the documentation of significant textual variants, and the preparation of a verified text according to contemporary principles of manuscript editing. It also provides analytical insights into the author’s sources, theological orientation, argumentative structure, relationship to al-Zamakhshari’s al-Kashshaf, and his techniques of abridgment and semantic condensation. The findings confirm the authenticity of the attribution to Ibn Bint al-‘Iraqi and demonstrate that his exegetical approach represents a mediating model combining linguistic analysis, usuli reasoning, and structured conciseness. The study further shows the presence of Ash‘ari theological tendencies in discussions of divine attributes while maintaining alignment with mainstream Sunni doctrine in eschatological matters. The research underscores the academic necessity of re-editing the text and its contribution to comparative Qur’anic exegetical studies. Keywords: ‘Alam al-Din al-‘Iraqi – Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Azim – Critical Edition – Qur’anic Exegesis – Surah Fussilat – Abridgment Methodology
