Abstract

This research aims to study the methodologies of Qur’anic exegetes in presenting additional interpretations and their types according to the early generations (Salaf). The study adopted both the inductive and analytical approaches. It was divided into an introduction, a preface, two chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction addresses the importance of the research topic, the reasons for selecting it, its objectives, the scope of the study, its research questions, previous studies related to the topic, the research methodology, as well as the structure of the research. The preface provides a definition of the exegesis of the early generations (Salaf). The first chapter examines the methodologies of Qur’anic exegetes in presenting additional interpretations beyond those transmitted from the Salaf. It also discusses their approaches to weighing and preferring among such additional opinions, along with illustrative examples drawn from the methodologies of prominent exegetes. The second chapter explores the types of additional interpretations beyond the statements of the Salaf, including the introduction of new meanings, unwarranted specification, unwarranted generalization despite the presence of specification, and unwarranted restriction without textual basis, in addition to highlighting invalid interpretive approaches. Among the key findings of the study is that the additional opinions presented by some exegetes do not follow a single pattern; rather, some constitute entirely new additions beyond what has been transmitted from the Salaf, while others involve only partial extensions. Keywords: Methodologies of exegetes, additional interpretations, types among the Salaf.
