Abstract
Abstract Title of the Study: The Statement of a Companion When It Contradicts a Prophetic Hadith: A Hadith and Uṣūlī Study Researcher: Asma Abdullah Al-Hassoun This study aims to: -Clarify the nature of the statement of a Companion and its rank as an authoritative source in legal inference according to scholars of uṣūl al-fiqh and hadith. -Examine and classify the various forms in which a Companion’s statement may contradict a marfūʿ hadith, with analytical and foundational discussion. -Highlight the approaches of scholars in dealing with cases where a Companion’s opinion conflicts with a Prophetic hadith, and explain the methods of preference between them. -Reach the preponderant opinion regarding the authority of a Companion’s statement in cases of contradiction and its impact on the formulation of juristic rulings. Research Methodology:The study adopts the inductive method. Among the Most Significant Findings of the Study: -The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were the best generation, distinguished by complete integrity and uprightness affirmed by both textual evidence and scholarly consensus, making their narrations and statements authoritative in legal reasoning without requiring individual accreditation. -The statement of a Companion varies in its authoritative status; it may be considered legally marfūʿ in meaning, or mawqūf, depending on its wording, content, and degree of connection to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or to independent reasoning (ijtihād). -The contradiction between a Companion’s statement and a marfūʿ hadith takes several forms, most notably total contradiction and contradiction to the general implication of a hadith, with each form leading to distinct uṣūlī discussions concerning acceptance and preference. Keywords: Statement – Companion – Conditions – Elevated Hadith.
