Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to refine the concept of the combination of Qur’ānic readings and to examine prohibited combinations arising from grammatical defect through an inductive analytical approach. The problem lies in the absence of a precise definition of this concept in the literature of Qur’ānic readings, the lack of detailed classification of prohibited forms, and the insufficient collection and organization of examples resulting from grammatical irregularity. The study contributes to enriching Qur’ānic readings scholarship by systematizing relevant examples, enabling a clearer understanding of the issue and helping to avoid combinations that lead to grammatical deficiency. It adopts an inductive method to collect and classify instances of prohibited combinations, and an analytical method to examine representative examples, drawing on works of Qur’ānic parsing, reading justification, and Arabic grammar. The findings indicate that early scholars did not provide an explicit definition of the combination of readings, and that later definitions lack precision. The study therefore proposes a precise definition of this concept and demonstrates that prohibited combinations may relate either to transmission or to linguistic defect—particularly grammatical—manifesting in multiple patterns rooted in structural disruption within the sentence.
