Abstract

Abstract This study examines the meaning of “ Becoming” as expressed by the morphological pattern of Faála in the Holy Qur’an. It aims at maintaining a comparative study between the meaning of “Becoming” as it appears in its pragmatic context within Quranic verses and the meanings traced in books of Quranic exegesis and linguistic studies of Qur’anic style, through the use of pragmatic analysis tools to uncover this meaning. The significance of the study lies in identifying the semantic value of becoming when associated and linked with the form faala, as required by Qur’anic linguistic contexts and their referential implications, which serve to constrain and specify meaning. The research follows a descriptive-analytical methodology, using a pragmatic approach as a tool to clarify the meaning of becoming in the form fa‘ala in the Qur’an. The concluding comment is that many occurrences of fa‘ala in the Holy Quran convey the meaning of becoming, even though they were considered by ʿUḍaymah and some Qur’anic exegetes to indicate causation or intensification. Keywords: (ʿUḍaymah, fa‘ala pattern a, morphological meaning, usage-based interpretation, syntactic analysis, descriptive analysis).
