Abstract

Abstract Islam legislated warfare for the purposes of spreading the message, repelling aggression, and removing injustice. It established rulings and regulations and confined it within a framework of moral principles that guide members of the Ummah to authentic Islamic conduct during times of war. In its early period, the Ummah adhered to these principles and values, and on their basis the Ibadis proceeded when they established their state in Yemen in 129 AH. Throughout their history, leaders emerged who demonstrated commitment to these principles, among them Imam Abu Hamza al-Shari, the most renowned of the Ibadi Shurat. One reason for choosing this topic is that it highlights the efforts of one leader in applying the Islamic methodology in warfare. The importance of the topic lies in identifying the personality of Imam Abu Hamza and his da‘wah role in Mecca and Medina. The study raises several questions: What scholarly and leadership status did the Imam possess? What methodology did he follow in his da‘wah? And what values did he demonstrate in his confrontations? The researcher adopted the historical method by presenting a brief biography of Imam Abu Hamza and describing his life and efforts; the descriptive method to trace the texts found in his sermons and stances; and the analytical method to interpret and study these texts. The study is divided into three sections: the first addresses an introduction to Imam Abu Hamza al-Shari and his da‘wah in the Hijaz; the second discusses Ibadi values in warfare prior to the outbreak of fighting; and the third examines Ibadi values during and after combat. The study concludes with several findings: that Abu Hamza is considered a symbol of truth and a standard-bearer of revolt against falsehood; that his life was closely tied to knowledge from his early years and reached completion with his joining the State of Talib al-Haqq in Yemen; and that his da‘wah in the Hijaz presented the true image of Islamic values in warfare. Keywords: Ibadism, values, methodology, da‘wah, Abu Hamza.
