Abstract
The Arabic linguistic heritage constitutes a fundamental pillar of cultural and intellectual identity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers promising opportunities to preserve and revitalize this heritage through Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and deep learning technologies. Accordingly, this study, entitled “Contributions of Artificial Intelligence to the Preservation of Arabic Linguistic and Literary Heritage,” aims to explore these contributions, highlight their achievements, and examine some of the challenges they face, with particular emphasis on the role of knowledge institutions and Arabic language academies across the Arab world. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology, which involves collecting data and surveying artificial intelligence applications and automated platforms that have had a significant impact on preserving Arabic linguistic and literary heritage. Among the most important findings of the study is that AI contributions have diversified across several domains, including the digitization of manuscripts and dictionaries, semantic and morphological language analysis, and the development of intelligent educational platforms that contribute to teaching the Arabic language globally in a manner that respects its traditional foundations. The study also concludes that sustaining Arabic linguistic heritage in the digital age requires the integration of efforts among language institutions, research centers, and technology companies to ensure its active presence in the global knowledge space. The study recommends establishing a unified, open-source Arabic linguistic database that includes heritage texts, classical dictionaries, and manuscripts. It also calls for supporting projects related to historical dictionaries and Arabic language processing—such as the Doha Historical Dictionary of Arabic and the Arabic Intelligence Center—through sustainable funding. Furthermore, the study advocates for the adoption of joint Arab policies to protect linguistic identity and for launching a unified Arab initiative for artificial intelligence in the Arabic language, supervised by the Union of Arabic Language Academies, and conducting critical research and studies on the impact of machine translation on conveying the rhetorical and aesthetic features of Arabic literary heritage texts into other languages. Keywords: Literary heritage; Digital Indexing; Linguistic Sustainability; Automated Language Processing; Language Models.
